From the 19th to the 20th century, opera was the dominant form of music in Italy. It is well known that it was Respighi, Cassella, and Martucci who stood up to "revive instrumental music. However, how many people know the name of Mancinelli (1848-1921), a composer who started this movement a little before them? He became director of the Bologna Conservatory and then conductor of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In his native Italy, he was more active in introducing Wagner and his works than Verdi and Puccini, and as a composer, he left several grandiose works in the Wagnerian style. As a composer, he also wrote some magnificent works in the style of Wagner, but perhaps because he is more highly regarded as a conductor (his name is on the fabric of the Orvieto Opera House), we do not hear much about his works.However, the two works heard here are truly anticipatory of Respighi, colorful and vibrant.
