"Mass No. 2," written around 1768–69 when Haydn (1732–1809) began serving Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, is believed to have been composed for the Berg Church in Eisenstadt (It appears that after being performed for the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, it was also reused for the Feast of St. Joseph.) Because the organ plays a prominent role throughout the entire work, it is called the “Great Organ Mass.” Perhaps Haydn himself played the organ and received a standing ovation? The overall tone of the piece is bright, lively, and full of joy—a truly beautiful work. The “Mass in Praise of St. Bernard of Offida,” written nearly 30 years later, is also known as the “Heilige Messe” because it incorporates an old hymn in the Sanctus section. Although Haydn once considered settling permanently in London, he ultimately returned to Vienna. In 1796, the year this piece was composed, he resumed his position as Kapellmeister for the Esterházy family; this Mass was written for the family’s second head. The choral parts are particularly rich, and it is a masterpiece that reflects Haydn’s vigorous creative energy even after he had turned 60. Naxos Japan
