A “talented conductor known only to connoisseurs” who sadly passed away in 2005 and was so highly regarded that the British magazine *Gramophone* published a full-page obituary in his honor. Beloved for over 20 years as the conductor of the Nashville Symphony, he first made a name for himself as Bernstein’s assistant and was highly regarded in the United States. This CD, recorded with the orchestra’s principal players and others, serves as a tribute to him. Only Symphony No. 1, which he was unable to record himself, is conducted by Mogleria. It is no exaggeration to say that Villa-Lobos’s music secured a place for Brazilian music on the world’s cultural map. Among his vast body of work—numbering over 1,500 pieces—the famous “Brazilian Bach” stands out prominently. Composed for a wide range of instrumental ensembles—from solo pieces to full orchestra—this collection is a tribute to Bach, blending colorful Brazilian musical language with a Baroque compositional style. The “Brazilian Bach” collection includes Villa-Lobos’s most popular work, “No. 5” for soprano and cello, as well as “The Little Train of Capira (No. 2),” which vividly evokes the image of a steam locomotive hurtling across the Brazilian landscape.
