[Shostakovich Symphonies by Neeme Järvi & the Scottish National Orchestra: Chandos Recordings Released as a Box Set] To commemorate the 120th anniversary of Shostakovich’s birth (2026) and the 90th anniversary of Neeme Järvi’s birth (June 7, 2027), Chandos is releasing a box set of its symphony recordings. Since some of the individual symphony CDs were out of print, this box set—which also includes collections of ballet suites and violin concertos—is sure to be eagerly awaited by fans. Järvi was born in Estonia in 1937 and studied under Mravinsky at the Leningrad Conservatory (as it was then known). After serving as chief conductor of the Estonian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Estonian National Opera, he emigrated to the West in 1980. In 1982, he was appointed chief conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, and in 1984, chief conductor of the Scottish National Orchestra (as it was then known). With the spread of digital recording and the growth of the CD market at that time, he—with his broad repertoire—actively pursued recording projects. One of Järvi’s most monumental achievements in the West—which draws dynamic vitality from both the music and the orchestra while eliminating arbitrariness and ambiguity—is his recording of Shostakovich’s symphonies for Chandos. For some reason, he ended up recording Symphonies Nos. 2, 3, 11 through 15 with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra for Deutsche Grammophon in later years, but thanks to the Scottish National Orchestra’s robust brass and percussion sections at the time, combined with Chandos’s masterful recording—which balances the orchestra’s overall harmony with the clarity of fine detail—these recordings are still frequently cited as among the best or as reference recordings for each individual piece. One of the hallmarks of Järvi’s interpretation is his fast tempo choices in the faster movements, which, depending on the piece, evoke a sense of racing speed, urgency, restlessness, or even a comical impression. Furthermore, the somewhat cold sound in the slow movements, along with expressions that convey irony and a unique sense of humor, are thought to be related to his experiences during World War II and the post-war period in the Soviet Union, as well as his musical connection with Shostakovich.
