The German composer Johanna Senfter was praised by her teacher Max Reger as possessing “extraordinary talent” and made a name for herself early on, winning the Arthur Nikisch Prize in 1910. Raised in a wealthy family and financially independent, she left behind 134 works, including nine symphonies. While her early style was delicate, under Reger’s influence, it evolved into a style characterized by rich textures, unrestrained harmony, and extreme chromaticism. Although she forged her own unique path by fusing Bach-like counterpoint with a late-Romantic sound, her works remained buried in history for a long time due to her shy personality—which led her to turn her back on avant-garde music—and prejudice against women. This album features his debut work, which was highly praised by Reger—Symphony No. 1, in which lyricism and counterpoint shine—as well as Symphony No. 9, the pinnacle of his creative output, which weaves Lutheran chorales throughout the entire piece and sublimates the loneliness and sorrow of the postwar era into a magnificent fugue.
