Description:

Hans Kessler was born in Waldegg, Bavaria. After studying at the Munich Conservatory under Rheinberger and others, he worked as a conductor and theory teacher. His visit to Budapest in 1879, where he met Brahms, became a defining event in his musical career. In 1883, invited by Liszt, he became a professor at the Hungarian Academy of Music. As head of the composition department, he devoted himself to education for over twenty years. His students included Bartók, Kodály, Dohnányi, and Kálmán, playing a decisive role in establishing the foundations of 20th-century Hungarian music. However, due to nationalistic pressures and changes in the political system, he faced hardship in his later years and passed away with many of his works scattered and lost. Kessler's music is characterized by an eclectic style, anchored in Brahmsian classicism while incorporating the colorful and descriptive elements of Liszt, Berlioz, and late Romanticism. Conscious of his role as an educator, he consistently presented his own compositions as models of compositional technique. Both the symphony and the "Passacaglia Concerto" featured on this album are world premiere recordings. The symphonies adhere to the four-movement model established after Beethoven, while the concertos fuse Baroque variation techniques with late Romantic harmony within a single-movement form. Rich in contrasts of light and shadow, they vividly etch a sense of melancholy for the fading tonal world. Naxos Japan
