This production features three of the most sought-after singers on the world opera scene in the three leading roles: Juan Francisco Gatel, a bel canto tenor with a richly expressive and intelligent soprano Anna Prohaska, and Sara Branch, a soprano with a clear sensibility. The production by Pierre Audi, a master of the European stage direction world, is innovative in that Orfe, Ulidis, and Amour, dressed in pure white, play a three-way love-hate relationship against the backdrop of Jean Kalman's fantastical stage design and a dance by Arno Suhaitemaker that represents the stirrings of the deepest psyche. Under Daniele Gatti's meticulous baton, the orchestra of the Florence May Festival, which includes period instruments in addition to wind instruments, portrays this masterpiece with sharpness and depth.
