Grayham Ross) Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra Nicholas Colon (conductor) Recorded live on April 5, 2024 at Helsinki Music Center, Helsinki, Finland Total recording time: approx. 91 min. Elgar's "Dream of Gerontius" is a distinguished theologian and scholar at Oxford University,An oratorio based on the fantastic poem of the same title by Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801-1890), who was also a priest. The work begins with the dying prayer of Gerontius (the protagonist), followed by his awakening after death, his judgment, and his journey to purgatory, which is seamlessly depicted by three solo singers, chorus, and orchestra. Elgar wrote "This is the best of me" on the last page of his manuscript, but the premiere at the Birmingham Festival on October 3, 1900 (conducted by Hans Richter) was well received by the critics, but the lack of preparation and the quality of the chorus and soloist were also problems for the public. However, due to the lack of preparation and the quality of the chorus and soloists, the work did not gain support from the general public. After careful preparation, the work was performed twice in Germany to great acclaim by Richard Strauss, who heard the performances, and after its premiere in London in 1903, it established a reputation in the UK. Ultimately, "Gerontius' Dream" came to be rightly regarded as a major work of oratorio and one of the greatest works Elgar ever wrote. The concert and live recording marked a milestone for Nicolas Colon, who will be the principal conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (the first British conductor in the orchestra's history) beginning in 2021. Not only did he invite the best soloists from the U.K. to perform his country's monumental work, he also invited the choir of his alma mater, Clare College, Cambridge (where Colón was organ scoller), to join him for a joint performance, a project that he personally took great pride in. The performance will be heard with the exuberance that this deserves. (Naxos Japan)
