Spatlese" means "late harvest. It often refers to wine made from fully ripened grapes, and is said to offer a mellow, mature taste. In keeping with this title, this CD is a collection of works by Mozart, Brahms, and Chopin, three composers in their mature period. Mozart's Fantasie and Sonata were written in his twenties, but they already have the air of a great composer, and are majestic pieces that foreshadow Beethoven. Chopin's sonata was written when he was 34 years old. Powerful and grand in scale, it is one of Chopin's masterpieces. Brahms' Three Interludes was written at the age of 59. It is a masterpiece with exquisite counterpoint and a melody full of the richness that is typical of Brahms in his later years. The sympathetic performance by Andreas Eggerzberger, who studied piano with Karl-Heinz Kemmerling and Oleg Meissenberg in Austria and the United States, is a charm. Naxos Japan
