Rattle and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks begin a new era with "Siegfried! Simon Rattle will succeed Mariss Jansons, who passed away suddenly during his term of office, as the 6th Chief Conductor of the Bayerisches Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra in the 2023/24 season. The release of "Siegfried" will coincide with the opening of the new season. This is the third in a series of live recordings of concert-style performances of "Der Ring des Nibelungen" that the duo has been working on since 2015, and once again, there is much to hear here, with a talented cast of singers and an orchestra that boasts the world's highest level of musicianship. The "Siegfried" is the only one of the "Ring" operas that is performed by a small number of singers. The key to success lies in the expressiveness of the singers and the skill of the ensemble. The title role of Siegfried is sung by Simon O'Neill, one of the best Wagner singers of our time, and Mime is sung by Peter Holle, who is popular mainly for his acting ability in modern operas. Brünnhilde is sung by the popular and talented Anja Kampe. Danae Contra's limpid singing as the Little Bird of the Forest is also noteworthy.While the Herkulessaal was the venue for the previous two recordings, the "Isar Philharmonie in Gasthaig HP8" is much larger this time, and together with the superb acoustic design by Yasuhisa Toyoda and his firm Nagata Acoustics, this recording offers an even greater sense of spatiality.
