Description:
Zemlinsky was a Viennese-born composer. He was also a highly regarded conductor, but because of his Jewish background, he was forced by Nazi Germany to flee to the United States in 1938. However, despite the encouragement of his brother-in-law Schoenberg, who had emigrated earlier, he failed to find success in the U.S. and died a lonely man. Zemlinsky had a special attachment to the "Maeterlinck Lieder," composed in 1913, and the "Sinfonietta," written in 1934 during a period of social instability, also quotes a theme from the Lieder, with its lyrics "Wohin gehst Du? is said to express his "self-doubt" and "farewell to Vienna. The unfinished "King Kandawres" is a work that is typical of his later years, with its mixture of sensuality and views on life and death. The performance by Albrecht, who was responsible for the premiere, will be a pleasure to listen to. Naxos Japan
