The fourth volume of Balakirev's complete piano works includes three scherzos, including Scherzo No. 1, written when he was 19 and strongly influenced by Chopin and Liszt, and Scherzo No. 2, one of the most popular piano pieces of his in his mature 60s, as well as arrangements. He was interested in Spanish music under the influence of his teacher Glinka, and the Fandango Exercise he composed as a young man is a world premiere recording. Nicholas Walker, who has recorded this series since its first release, studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the Moscow Conservatory, and is known as a Balakirev specialist, receiving high acclaim for his Beethoven performances and organizing the 2010 centenary of his death event in the UK.
