A legendary live recording from Klemperer’s final years—his very last performance of the “Resurrection”—has been revived. With a running time of nearly 100 minutes, the performance is astonishingly slow. Yet it is a truly masterful performance in which the music never stagnates but maintains its forward momentum. It is said that Klemperer himself set both the fastest and slowest performance records in history for *Resurrection*. This is an intense performance that strikes the listener’s very core. The lineup features the renowned alto Alfreda Hodgson, whom Klemperer also frequently featured alongside the Scottish soprano Anne Finlayson-Tennstedt, with the chorus conducted by Wilhelm Pitz, who helped shape an era at Bayreuth. It’s a first-rate ensemble. The mystical resonance of the final movement is nothing short of moving. Although it is a stereo recording, it is regrettable that the sound lacks breadth; however, this does not detract from the listening experience. Please be aware of this before purchasing.
