The Bruckner master Eugen Jochum's last tour of Japan, in September 1986, six months before his death, was Mozart's 33rd, which is also a wonderful and rarely heard work. The Bruckner is a great treat to listen to. Jochum had matured in his last years and had become one with Bruckner's music. The first movement is the ultimate in romanticism, yet it never falters. The orchestra's animated movements are also worthy of special mention. I have never heard such a slow second movement. The sound of the scherzo is three dimensional, and the orchestra's movement is very lively. The sound of the scherzo is three-dimensional and deeply sculpted.
