Horneck’s Mahler: Symphony No. 4! Finally Here! The previous release, Mahler: Symphony No. 1 (EXCL-00026), was a huge success, earning a “Special Selection” designation from Record Arts magazine, rave reviews from Hidekazu Yoshida, and a No. 6 ranking on the Readers’ Choice list. This achievement served as a strong indication of the series’ future potential. Höneck’s approach to music-making can be summed up in a single phrase: “Viennese style.” He repeatedly uses the word “Viennese” during rehearsals, thoroughly adhering to this style. He has also thoroughly studied Central European musical phrasing, as evidenced by the Bohemian dance rhythms and expressions of indigenous folk songs, most notably in the second movement. Höneck had undertaken the same project with the Czech Philharmonic three weeks prior to this recording, and he has incorporated the unique bowing techniques and traditional, distinctive ensemble expressions gained from that experience into this Pittsburgh recording. In the third movement—a highlight of the recording—Höneck’s characteristic dynamic range is expressed throughout, fully realizing the spatiality that Mahler sought. For the final movement, he enlisted the up-and-coming soprano Sunhae Im (who is active in the fields of opera and oratorio, has performed with conductors such as Helleweg, Brüggen, and Chailly, and is currently a member of the Stuttgart State Opera). The singer was asked to blend seamlessly with the orchestra, adopting a highly instrumental vocal style reminiscent of a boy soprano to evoke a crystalline, celestial atmosphere.
