Gyan Riley—whose father is minimal music pioneer Terry Riley—joins forces with Devendra Banhart, her longtime collaborator since co-producing the 2005 album *Cripple Crow*, and Noah Georgeson—a long-standing ally with whom he co-produced the 2005 album *CrippleCrow*—form the new collaborative project HUG. Having performed in Japan several times as a special trio, delivering dreamlike, warm performances that enveloped audiences, the three have finally released their self-titled debut album as HUG. It is released by *LuakaBop*, a label that has continued to captivate music enthusiasts with its diverse catalog that transcends both national borders and genres. Woven organically, as if surrendering to a natural flow, this album, *HUG*, is a work born from the pure curiosity of these three longtime friends as they return to their childlike selves. At the same time, it embodies the depth and intimate, introspective aspects of these artists—who are also independent musicians in their own right—featuring ambient elements and moments of mystery. As Devendra, Gyan, and Noah take turns leading the way, each track blends seamlessly across folk traditions and genres. “CowWithHalfMoonParasol,” the lead single and the album’s opening track, begins with the croaking of frogs. Environmental sounds from other places—such as sacred hills in India and rivers flowing through Venezuela and Colombia—that hold special meaning for each member of the trio further enrich the album’s soundscape.
