Now Available on Blu-ray and DVD: A Star-Studded Collaboration Between Barenboim and Boulez—A Collection of Liszt’s Piano Concertos Featuring Barenboim as solo pianist and Boulez conducting the Staatskapelle Berlin, this video recording—which includes Liszt’s piano concertos and other works—captures the live performance of a concert held in June 2011 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth. This concert was a major highlight of the “Ruhr Piano Festival 2011” and drew significant attention because Barenboim—who had never previously made an official recording of Liszt’s piano concertos—performed both works in a single performance. Held annually in cities along the Rhine and Ruhr rivers in Germany, the “Ruhr Piano Festival” brings together numerous pianists—from veterans to rising stars—at concert halls in Essen and Dortmund. In addition to solo recitals, the festival features duets, concertos, and even jazz—drawing keen attention from piano music enthusiasts. Baremboim has appeared at this festival on numerous occasions; in May 2007, he led his flagship ensemble, the Berlin State Orchestra (Staatskapelle Berlin), in a free-spirited and powerful performance where he both played and conducted the complete Beethoven piano concertos. For the two Liszt piano concertos that Barenboim approached with great anticipation—as is already evident from the CD of the same program—he was conducted by Pierre Boulez, a maestro with whom he has shared a friendship spanning over 40 years and who has led the Staatskapelle Berlin—a series of “Mahler Symphony Concerts”—the conditions were perfectly aligned. It is also a delight that this recording includes the complete program from that evening, including two Wagner works—the “Siegfried Idyll” and the “Faust” Overture—which had not previously been released on CD. It was in 1966 that Boulez first appeared at Bayreuth, bringing a breath of fresh air with his meticulous and lucid conducting.
