Description:

Hakkinen's Bach "The Mean Law" Volume 1! Aapo Hakkinen is a world-class harpsichordist from Nordic Finland. His four volumes of Bach concertos with Helsinki Baroque have received worldwide acclaim (Volumes 1 and 2 were recommended by the German online magazine KLASSIK.COM, and Volumes 3 and 4 were awarded the Diapason d'Or in France). Clavier Works, Volume 1 is now available! Hakkinen has made recordings on various precious harpsichords and clavichords. For this recording, Hakkinen mainly uses a rare harpsichord made by Farter (1738), which is in the collection of the Germanic National Museum, and a clavichord made by Schmahl (c.1800), which is said to have been Bach's favorite instrument. 24 "Preludes and Fugues" are performed on one of these instruments. Furthermore, BWV.852 and BWV.865 are additionally performed by a historical organ (1783) from Backemor, North Germany, allowing the listener to compare these two pieces performed by two different instruments. Also of note is the jacket design, which features the distinctive pattern on the cover of Bach's autograph. These 12 spiral patterns have been interpreted by some musicologists as "Bach's instructions on how to tune the music. The word "Wohltemperierte," which is the core of the title of the piece, originally means "well-tempered," although it is popularly known in Japan as "mean law. The "well-tempered" temperament (tuning method) indicated by the original title (Das Wohltemperierte Clavier) is still a matter of controversy, and is explored in depth in the essay by Wolfgang Kostujak in the booklet (in English/German).
