Description:

An Expert in Contemporary Music Zimmermann’s Concerto, Performed by Siegfried Palm The lineup is truly stellar, featuring conductors such as Buhl and Zender! ★The first release in the Studio Line Series is a collection of works by Zimmermann. One of the defining characteristics of his style is his use of the technique of quotation. The essence of various musical genres—from Baroque to Romantic, as well as folk music and jazz—is incorporated like hidden images. At a profound level, these quoted elements fuse within the music—blending past, present, and future—and explode with nuclear intensity. In the Cello Concerto (No. 1), he crafts monstrous music possessing almost magical power from a single musical cell. Palm’s superhuman bowing technique is breathtaking. (2) “Photopsis” features a style in which the roar of the trumpet—reminiscent of the opera *The Soldiers*—stirs a sense of unease in the listener; with passages occasionally evoking Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and with Zimmermann’s collage technique generously incorporated, this might be considered one of his finest works. (3) *Tratto II* was written for the 1968 Osaka World Expo. It is a seminal work from the very early days of electronic music. The term “Tratto” has various meanings, but here it is interpreted as “stretch” (the extension of time and space). The sections that progress from the beginning of the piece and those that move backward from the end were written to proceed simultaneously. It is a work that evokes a strange sensation, as if time and space have been warped. [About the Performers] Siegfried Palm, who plays the cello in (1), was born in Wuppertal in 1927. He began playing the cello at age 8 under his father’s guidance and later studied with Mainardi. From 1947, he served for 15 years as principal cellist of the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra under Isserlis, and subsequently played key roles as principal cellist with the Hamburg and Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestras. Above all, he has made his mark on history as an expert in contemporary music; many composers—including Kagel, Ligeti, Xenakis, Penderecki, Feldman, and Zimmerman—have written works for him. Furthermore, both the orchestra and the conductor represent the very best in their fields. It feels as though we are witnessing firsthand WERGO’s lofty ideals as a standard-bearer of contemporary music. King International
