The latest album from the male vocal ensemble bringing 16th-century forgotten masterpieces back to life The 17th album released by the male vocal ensemble “Quintecento”—whose name means “16th century” in Italian—on the Hyperion label features Christopher Tye’s “Peterhouse Mass” and other works by the 16th-century English organist and composer. Though less well-known than his Tudor-era contemporary Thomas Tallis, Tye was a composer who skillfully navigated a perilous political era in England—a time marked by successive changes in monarchs from Henry VIII to Elizabeth I and a nation torn between Catholicism and Protestantism—during which church music was required to adapt accordingly. In terms of skill in composition and polyphony, nothing surpasses this work in its sense of color, rich textures, and intertwining melodies. This “Peterhouse Mass” was discovered in part scores preserved at Peterhouse College, University of Cambridge, and the missing tenor part has been reconstructed by Paul Dow.
