Max Richter’s latest project is a beautiful collaboration between sleep and sound! The 8-hour full version is finally available on CD. With his new album *Sleep*, Richter has made history. He has created the longest single piece of music ever recorded—music that listeners can hear—and experience—even as they drift off to sleep. “This is a personal lullaby dedicated to our turbulent world. In a sense, it’s a declaration of ‘slow living,’” Richter says. While *Sleep* is groundbreaking in every respect, musically it builds upon the framework Richter has long upheld—that is, it continues to question what the language of classical music should be. As with his previous works, *Sleep* centers on piano, strings, keyboards, electronics, and vocals, crossing the blurred boundaries between various musical genres. If you expect music with an instantly soothing, hypnotic effect, you’ll find that something entirely different unfolds. While the previously released one-hour version, *From Sleep*, was curated “for attentive listening,” this eight-hour version of *Sleep* is a work premised on the idea of listening attentively—and experiencing—from start to finish —from start to finish—and is intended so that listeners who are awake at the beginning of the track will drift off to sleep by the end. Initially released exclusively as a digital download, the 8-hour version is now also available on CD and high-resolution Blu-ray Audio following the positive reception of the 1-hour version. “Since I wrote these pieces to be listened to in the middle of the night, I hope people will actually fall asleep while listening to them,” Richter said.
