Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis
Description:
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis' birth, a four-album collection of his 1958 Cookbook albums with Shirley Scott, "Cookbook, Vol. 1," "Cookbook, Vol. 2," "Cookbook, Vol. 3," and "Smokin'," a four-album collection. The four albums in this package were recorded at Van Gelder Studios over three sessions on June 20, September 12, and December 5, 1958. The groove orientation at this time was a funky offshoot of the so-called hard bop school, known as soul jazz, and these sessions were the focus of the then 34-year-old Van Gelder. Eddie Davis had a sharp, instantly recognizable, tough tenor tone, and could get into a sax battle with anyone. He gained experience early on playing in the bands of Cootie Williams (1942-1944), Lucky Millinder, Andy Kirk (1945-1946), and Louis Armstrong, but he began leading his own group in 1946, and his early recordings as leader were horn His early recordings as leader had the feel of explosive R&B with lots of screaming, but he hit it off with Fats Navarro at one session. From 1960 to 1962, Davis was a member of the Count Basie Band from 1952 to 1953, 1957, and 1964 to 1973, and he worked with Shirley Scott's trio from 1955 to 1960. After briefly retiring to become a booking agent in 1963-1964, Davis rejoined Basie. In his later years, Lockjaw often recorded with Harry "Sweets" Edison and remained a busy soloist until his death. 180g weight 4LP also released.Produced by Nick Phillips, the four analog LPs, limited to 5,000 worldwide, are pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI, and each LP is individually housed in a chip-on jacket with original Prestige Records album artwork.
