Transcriptions heard on a symphonic organ and on a Bach organ [Overview] - A two-disc set: one CD of late-Romantic Bach transcriptions played on the late-Romantic (symphonic) organ of the Thomaskirche, and one of Bach's Goldberg Variations played on the Bach organ of the Dreieinigkeitskirche in Regensburg. [The Programme] - In the late-Romantic transcriptions, which include such famous pieces as the Chaconne and the "Air on the G String", the weighty, richly coloured sound of the Thomaskirche's Sauer organ is a splendid thing to hear. The church was originally a large Catholic building taken over by the Protestants, and its considerable volume suits a symphonic organ perfectly. - The Goldberg Variations, built on a bass theme, lend themselves naturally to the organ; Halubek made his own transcription and plays it on the Bach organ of the Dreieinigkeitskirche in Regensburg. That church was the first newly built Protestant church in Catholic Bavaria, and is about two-thirds the size of the Thomaskirche. Its Bach organ, in Baroque specification, was newly built in 2020. [Performer] - Jörg Halubek studied church music, organ and harpsichord in Stuttgart and Freiburg with Jon Laukvik and Robert Hill, and then at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with Andrea Marcon among others. A specialist in early music active as conductor, harpsichordist and organist, he is also professor of historical keyboard instruments at the Stuttgart Musikhochschule. [Recording] - The recordings, as throughout the series, are by Markus Heiland, whose documentary-style microphone placement dispenses entirely with artificial reverberation or other acoustic post-processing, allowing the acoustic of each church and the individual character of each organ to stand out. - CD1: September 2024, Thomaskirche, Leipzig; Wilhelm Sauer organ (1889/1908). - CD2: October 2025, Dreieinigkeitskirche, Regensburg; Hendrik Ahrend Bach organ (2020).
