Music on a "Desert Island" for ClaireThis three-CD album features a unique conception of Schubert's late sonatas, selected and produced by American pianist Claire Huanchy, who lives in Germany. Schubert's late sonatas were an oasis for 14-year-old Claire amidst the whirlwind of virtuoso transcriptions and concertos during her time at the Curtis Institute of Music. It was the first piece of repertoire that brought tears to her eyes after repeated listening to it in the library, and it has become the "desert island" music that has accompanied Claire on various occasions since she and her teachers worked diligently on it. Born March 22, 1990, in Rochester, N.Y., to Chinese immigrant parents who are scientists, Clare began piano at age 6 and studied with pianist Ursula Ingolfsson-Fassbindo at the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia until age 11. at age 8. At age 8, she won a gold medal at a piano competition in Cincinnati. As the youngest medalist in the Pre-College Division, she performed with the orchestra at the International Division Winners' Concert.From 2003 to 2007, she studied at the Curtis Institute of Music with Gary Graffman, along with Yuja Wang, who is three years her senior, and from 2007 to 2016, she studied with Arieh Vardi at the Hanover University of Music and Drama in Germany. European Chopin Piano Competition and won the Orpheum Music Prize in Zurich; in 2010, she won the National Chopin Competition in Miami, where she also received a special prize; in 2011, she won second prize at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich. In 2018, she won the first prize at the Geza Anda Competition in Zurich. Since then she has performed internationally and is an ambassador for Henle Verlag; her CDs are available from Berlin Classics, Capriccio, Klanglogo, and others.
