Description:

The fourth album by Ana Carla Masa, whose unique and minimalist cello playing has attracted much attention in Japan as well as in Europe and the U.S., is an album that delves deeper with a band sound into her musical roots, especially in Cuba, and her feelings toward the Caribbean and Latin America, which were heard in her previous album. Ana Carla Masa was born and raised in Cuba to a father, Carlos Masa (only one year old at the time), and a Cuban mother, Mirtha Sierra, who moved to Cuba via France in 1975 after fleeing the military dictatorship of Pinochet in Chile. Her parents were both musicians, and she was surrounded by music from an early age. She was first taught to play the piano by Miriam Valdés, the sister of Chucho Valdés, and naturally picked up the cello as a result. After studying the basics of music in Cuba, he moved to Tarragona (Catalonia) with his family in 2007 at the age of 12. He continued to study music at the Conservatoire de Paris Region and the Sorbonne in Paris, France, while simultaneously continuing his musical activities. During these activities, he was exposed to various musical styles such as classical, jazz, Arabic music, and electronica, which broadened his talent and led him to his current unique style. This album is a further development of the feelings toward the music of the Caribbean and Latin America, especially Cuba, which are her musical roots, as shown in her previous album, "Bahia". Until then, she had released albums based on solo cello playing, but for this album, she has developed an all-out band sound. She arranged and produced all the songs by herself. Ana Carla Massa's cello and vocals are supported by two Cubans on percussion and sax & flute, a Guadeloupean on drums, and two Germans and a Frenchman, a lineup unique to the French-based musician. The sound of this international group is fresh and appealing, different from that of Caribbean and Latin American bands. All 13 songs are Ana Carla Massa's own compositions, and the variety of music, including rumba, Cuban salsa, merengue, cumbia, samba, tango, vals, and folklore, is a perfect example of her talent as a songwriter. Four of the songs are self-covers of songs from the previous album.
