The third Mendelssohn concert by the prodigious Manze and the NDR Philharmonic Orchestra is the sublime Symphony No. 2 "Hymn"! Originally known as an acclaimed classical violinist, Manze has also been active as a conductor in recent years, serving as principal conductor of the North German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in Hannover since 2014. The duo's highly acclaimed series of Mendelssohn symphonies is now available on disc. This disc features a live recording of the epic Symphony No. 2, "Hymn. The soloists in this long cantata in praise of God are Anna Lucia Richter, Esther Dierkes, and Robin Trischler. Richter is a prize-winning artist, having won the second prize in the youth category of the 2008 Berlin National Vocal Competition and the first prize in the 2012 International Robert Schumann Competition. In this performance, she performed with a fast pace throughout the piece. Symphony No. 2 "Hymn" was composed in June 1840 for the 400th anniversary of Gutenberg's invention of letterpress printing, and was premiered at the closing concert of a series of events at St. Thomas' Church in Leipzig, a church associated with Bach. It is a large work. It begins with a three-movement sinfonia that opens with a triumphant theme played by the trombone, and continues with a cantata section centering on the chorus. The Lutheran chorale "Now all have hearts, mouths, and hands" performed by the eight-part unaccompanied chorus at the beginning of the seventh chorale in the cantata section is very impressive (Bach also wrote cantatas BWV 9 and 192 using this chorale), and the world expands further with the addition of the orchestra. The finale is a large choral fugue, with the triumphant theme that appears at the beginning played on a high note, leading to a moving finale. King International
