The Mariinsky Theatre's production of Strauss's "The Shadowless Woman", which was performed by the Gergiev-led Mariinsky Theatre in Japan in February 2011, is now available on video! Jonathan Kent's production was well received for its extreme contrast between the spiritual world, which is quite fantastical with the use of giant flowers, and the earthly world, which is a trashy downtown of London, making the stage easy to understand. The singers were the same as in the Japan tour: Mlada Hudrey as the Empress, Edem Umerov as Barak, Oliga Sergeyeva as Barak's wife, Oliga Savova as the nanny, Tatyana Kravtsova as the falcon, and Aleksandr Timchenko as the young man's visionary, and they all had their roles well in hand.Happily, in this video, Avgust Amonov, who was scheduled but did not participate in the visit to Japan, sings the Czar. He is a Kazan-born veteran and one of the Mariinsky Theater's signature singers. He had just sung the title role in Verdi's "Otello" at the Metropolitan Opera in October 2012, just prior to this recording, as an urgent substitute for Johan Botha, singing three times with great success. Gergiev's conducting was dynamic and sensitive, firmly portraying the world of this extremely difficult work, and it is no wonder that it was so well received on its tour of Japan. The production, the performance, and the vivid images are a perfect triumvirate of Mariinsky's "The Shadowless Woman," a great work that will be enjoyed in great detail! King International
