Description:

Salzburg Music Festival 2020The Queen of Mezzo-sopranos Elina Galancha, Thielemann & Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra perform Wagner's "Wesendonck Lieder" and Bruckner's "Romantic" The Salzburg Music Festival celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2020. The Salzburg Festival was in jeopardy due to the global pandemic, but was rescheduled with a shortened program. The program included Bruckner's Symphony No. 4 performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Thielemann and Wagner's "Wesendonck Lieder" with the queen of mezzo-sopranos, Elina Galancha, as the soloist. Wagner's "Wesendonck Lieder" was composed in 1857 from five poems given to him by his patron, businessman Wesendonck's wife Mathilde. Written in parallel with the ultimate love opera, "Tristan und Isolde," it means that Wagner left behind two masterpieces during his ongoing relationship with his mistress, Mathilde. In the third piece, "In the Greenhouse," in which Wagner sings of his unfulfilled wish to the plants in the greenhouse, Galancha beautifully expresses his feelings of despair and unfulfilled hope. The fifth piece, "Dream," was adapted from the "Love Duet" in Act II of "Tristan und Isolde. In the fifth piece, "Dream," Garanča's beautiful voice quietly sings of the sorrow of secret love, singing of love for a dream.Thielemann, who has always spoken of his passion for Bruckner, has been praised as "the foremost exponent of the German orthodox tradition." Thielemann is no stranger to Bruckner's No. 4, having performed it with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra (2008) and the Staatskapelle Dresden (2015). The world of Bruckner is carefully spun note by note, and Thielemann's confident performance is delivered with the rich sound of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and an excellent ensemble.
