Sergei Nakalyakov… Born in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, in 1977, he began studying piano at a young age but was forced to give it up after being involved in a traffic accident at the age of six. He then took up the trumpet, where his talent blossomed in the blink of an eye. At age 10, he made his first appearance with an orchestra, and at 14, he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival. Praised for his virtuosity and exceptional musicality, he released his first CD at age 15. Many of you probably remember the sensation he caused at the time, don’t you? This is footage of Nakaryakov from 2004, when he was 27 years old. It fully captures both the struggles and the maturity of the “child prodigy” as he grew into adulthood. His repertoire was incredibly broad; he could masterfully perform anything from original works to new pieces written specifically for him. While those around him focused solely on his virtuosity, he himself always strove to “sing” through his trumpet. In his search for new means of musical expression, he was captivated by the deep tone of the flugelhorn and is said to have mastered this instrument to perfection as well. By contrasting footage of him as a child with his performance at age 27, we can gain insight into what this genius musician “lost” and what he “gained.” A boy playing the trumpet with a triumphant air, and a young man playing carefully with his head slightly bowed… The passage of time is equal for everyone.
