Description:
Portuguese pianist Bernardo Santos plays a collection of concertos inspired by Iberia! A versatile soloist, orchestral collaborator, and chamber musician, Portuguese pianist Bernardo Santos has performed in over 20 countries, including Portugal's Casa da Musica and San Francisco Monastery, Spain's Teatro de Catalunya and Teatro del Liceu, and Dusseldorf's Tonhalle. The orchestra has performed in more than 20 countries and is regularly invited to perform at music festivals throughout Europe, South America, and Asia. He complemented his artistic career with studies of the Portuguese composers Berta Aves de Souza and Frederico de Freitas, and has been responsible for the critical editing and publication of both composers' works. His current research focuses on the piano works of Portuguese composer Rui Coelho. This album couples the concerto works of Portuguese composer Rui Coelho and Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. Each piece expresses the distinctive aesthetic of 20th century Iberian music, evoking images of the night inspired by Iberian land and culture, with flowing piano tones and richly textured and nuanced orchestral playing. The relationship between Falla and Coelho is documented in letters and articles by both composers kept at the Rui Coelho Foundation in Lisbon, Portugal, the Portuguese National Library, and the Archives in Granada, Spain.Coelho is considered one of the most important Portuguese composers of the 20th century and was deeply committed to creating a national musical identity by combining modernist techniques with elements of Portuguese tradition and history. Although his works are not widely recognized, the "Night on the Streets of Mouraria" (the first commercial recording) included in this release expands the recognition of Coelho's contribution to this genre, which is an important but previously overlooked part of Portugal's symphonic heritage.
