Description:
Two concertos by Finnish composer Kalevi Aho! The concerto series by Finnish composer Kalevi Aho. The "Concerto for Timpani and Orchestra" was commissioned by the Turku Philharmonic for its principal timpani player, Ari-Pekka Maemper. In composing this piece, Aho received a detailed explanation from Maemper of Turku about the characteristics and possibilities of the instrument, and developed the idea of a "concerto for solo instrument and orchestra" in which the timpani would be more than an "accent" or "spice" for the orchestra. The five movements, "Funora - Presto - Cadenza," "Interlude (Andante)," "Allegro ritmico," "Mesto," and "Presto - Epilogue," are performed without a break (attacca). The "Concerto No. 1 for Piano and Orchestra" is one of Aho's relatively early concertos. The piece was inspired by his study of "numerology" during the time he was working on this piece, and the "traveling numbers" that he was so interested in were applied to the material and structure of the piece. The fast tempo dominates the first movement and the slow tempo of the second movement, followed by the third movement with its Allegro molto "toccata" and the gentle final movement in attacca. The work is highly virtuoso. The soloist, Sonja Hlaki, is a Finnish pianist who holds a doctorate from the Sibelius Academy. She has an established reputation as a specialist in Aho's music, and her recording of a collection of Aho's solo piano works (BISSA2106) has attracted media attention in many countries.
