However, to simply describe Aretha Franklin as one of the great American artists of all time would be far too understated. With a vocal range spanning multiple octaves, her voice has moved the hearts of people around the world throughout a career of over 60 years that is truly unparalleled; she is a true treasure who has achieved every conceivable accomplishment and honor as a singer-songwriter. Now, a magnificent collection that comprehensively spans her entire reign as the “Queen of Soul” is finally here. Titled *ARETHA*, this collection—which includes tracks from every label on which she has ever recorded—is the first to bring together the entirety of her career in a single compilation. *ARETHA* will be released in three formats: a 4-CD box set containing 81 tracks—including 19 tracks making their CD debut—as well as a CD featuring 20 carefully selected highlight tracks from the box set and a 2-LP vinyl set. With an autobiographical film depicting Aretha’s life (starring Jennifer Hudson) scheduled for release in the U.S. next year, there is no doubt that, together with this comprehensive retrospective, Aretha’s voice and story will once again resonate around the world from this year into next. Like the 4-disc box set, this highlight CD—which is organized primarily in chronological order—opens with her first single, “Never Grow Old,” released in 1956 on J.V.B. Records. It continues with her first single on Columbia Records, “Today I’m Singing the Blues,” and her biggest hits from her Atlantik era, “Respect” and “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You),” as well as tracks from her Arista era such as “Freeway of Love” and her No. 1 hit with George Michael, “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me).” Furthermore, this release includes a work tape version of “Until You Come Back to Me,” “Call Me,” alternate versions of “Rock Steady,” and a live recording of “(You Make Me Feel) A Natural Woman” from the 38th Annual Kennedy Center Honors in December 2015—a performance widely regarded as her final one—among many other rare tracks.
