Description:
Reflects the compositional techniques of the composer’s later years, such as the Neo-Baroque style [Overview] ◆ A Turbulent Life and Contributions to Modern Italian Instrumental Music Franco Margola (1908–1992) was a major 20th-century Italian composer who, influenced by Casella and others, established his own unique “Neoclassical” style. He rose to prominence at a young age and collaborated with composers such as Michelangeli, while also enduring harsh forced labor under the German military during World War II. After the war, he served as a professor and dean at major music conservatories across the country. While nurturing outstanding students such as Camillo Toni, he authored numerous seminal works and method books that form the foundation of today’s music education. ◆A “Second Spring” for the Guitar That Bloomed in His Later Years Margola left behind a body of work comprising approximately 800 pieces, of which about 350 are compositions for solo guitar. After retiring in 1975, faced with a serious deterioration in his health, he rapidly became drawn to the simple beauty of the guitar, an instrument of silence. Supported by a steady stream of “commissions” from publishers and many renowned guitarists, the guitar became a vehicle for his soul during this astonishingly prolific period in his final years, allowing him to escape the burdens of old age and illness and attain “spiritual peace.” ◆Five Sonatas for Solo Guitar and the Neo-Baroque Style All five sonatas follow the traditional three-movement structure. They are characterized by a Neo-Baroque style that purifies Baroque rhetorical devices—such as “implied harmony,” which evokes multiple voices within a single melodic line while avoiding heavy chords; strict Bach-style counterpoint; and the use of the chromatic scale. Each sonata is imbued with a diverse range of emotions, including Chopin-esque melancholy, ancient-style pentatonic scales reminiscent of Ponce, irony reminiscent of Nino Rota, and crystalline lyricism that seems to bid farewell to the mundane world.
