Rousset's Passion Revives the Charm of Salieri's Rise to Fame Christophe Rousset and Les Talents Reliques, who are passionate about reviving Salieri's operas, have brought us another treasure: Armida, the first full-scale opera by the 20-year-old Salieri, which was published in 1771. It is said that it was this work that brought him recognition and made him a household name. There were recordings of the overture and arias, but this is the world's first full-length version. It is based on Torquato Tasso's epic poem "The Liberated Jerusalem," but Traetta in 1761, Gluck in 1777, and Rossini in 1817 wrote masterpieces on the same subject. Salieri's version, with a libretto by Marco Cortellini, is an intense drama about the East-West conflict between Christianity and Islam, featuring Armida, Rinaldo, Ismene, and Ubaldo. Salieri's music is said to be a perfect fusion of Italian and French styles, allowing the audience to enjoy the energetic world. The leading role of Armida is played by Amerink's treasured daughter, Reneke Luiter. She is a soprano who has been in great demand in recent years for her accuracy and flamboyant singing. Rinaldo, the lover, was originally sung by a castrato, but Canadian soprano Florrie Valiquette gives an excellent performance with the charm of a treasure trove of talent. Ruse's Salieri, whose "Talar" won the 2019 Recording Academy Award for Best Opera, brings even more depth and confidence to his interpretation.Salieri is often thought to be less talented as Mozart's adversary, but his charming melodies and crisp delivery remind us of his greatness.
