The 12th “Naniwa ‘Orchestral’ Winds Concert 2014” featured Akio Marutani of Yodogawa Technical High School as guest conductor, and Shigenori Nakagawa of Okayama Gakugeikan High School—who, since taking up his post there in 2002, has led the school band to become a national powerhouse, competing in the All-Japan Wind Band Competition five times and winning the Gold Prize three times—as guest conductors, marking the first time in NOW history that the festival featured three performances!! NOW 2014 opened with P. Graham’s *Summon the Dragon*, and in addition to masterpieces by Granger, Bennett, and Reed, the program featured Neribel’s *Antiphonale* and Smith’s *Fanfare, Ballad & Jubilee*—both of which were performed again following last year’s program. Also, NOW’s performance of Spark’s *Music of the Universe (Celestial Bodies)* is a must-hear!! Giannini’s *Symphony No. 3*, performed for the first time this year, has almost no existing recordings, making this a rare opportunity to hear it.
