Tullio Serafin, one of the leading opera conductors of the first half of the 20th century, was Toscanini's assistant at La Scala in Milan, and in 1909 he succeeded him as music director of La Scala. Serafin, who knew everything about Italian opera, recorded Verdi's "Trovatore" in 1962 with the Orchestra and Chorus of La Scala in Milan, his old home, and it is a masterpiece that shows us the charm of opera as an ensemble, including the singing of such famous singers as Bergonzi and Stella. The lyrics are not accompanied by a bilingual translation. Universal Music
