Description:
Johannes Plamzoller switches from violin to viola for this performance! A collection of little-known 18th-century Prussian viola concertos, resurrected from the archives of the “Berlin Singakademie”! An ambitious release featuring four world premiere recordings. Import edition with Japanese liner notes! Volume 3 of the “Berlin Concertos” series by Johannes Plamzoller & Ensemble Diderot, who lead the early music world with thorough research and exciting programming. (Volume 1: “Cello Concertos of Northern Germany” (ADX11200); Volume 2: “Harpsichord Concertos of the Berlin School” (ADX11211)) This album focuses on the “viola,” an instrument that was often underappreciated as an accompaniment instrument in 18th-century Europe. Johannes Plamzoller, who leads the ensemble, switched from his usual violin to the viola for this recording. At that time, in Berlin and Potsdam at the Prussian court (under the reign of Frederick II), a movement was emerging—ahead of other countries—to recognize the expressive potential of the viola as a solo instrument. This recording features rare viola concertos from the archives of the “Berlin Singakademie,” which were lost during World War II and rediscovered in Kyiv in 1999. In addition to works by the renowned J.G. Graun, the album features four world premiere recordings by Grauel, Mara, and C.H.H. Benda—all members of the Prussian Court Orchestra—making this a historically significant collection. Through the Ensemble Diderot’s signature performances—full of clarity and vitality—the “Berlin taste” of the era, a fusion of the Gallant and Sensitive styles, is vividly brought back to life. Please enjoy Plumzeller’s rich, lyrical viola tone and his expressive dramatic interpretation. Tokyo M Plus
