Description:
Sigismund Thalberg, Swiss pianist and composer, studied piano with Moscheles in London at the age of 14 and gave his first public concert in May of the same year. He was later taught by Hummel and Czerny, and in 1835 went to Paris, where he won acclaim as a pianist. As a composer, he left behind transcriptions of operas and piano concertos that showcase his brilliant pianism, surpassing that of Franz Liszt. This album is a reprint from a six-disc box set released in May 2021 (original pressing was by MARCO POLO), and contains six works based on melodies from operas by Verdi, Rossini, and Bellini. Led by a slow introduction, these works, with their ornate ornamentation of famous operatic melodies, were written for Thalberg's own performance and were very popular at the time. It is said that Liszt, who was regarded as his rival, sometimes performed his works and praised him as a "creator of a new art form. Francesco Nicolosi, born in Italy in 1954, performed the piece. He is not only a virtuoso of superb technique, but also makes efforts to study and popularize his works as the president of the International Research Center for Thalberg's works. Naxos Japan
