Rachmaninov, Sergei (1873-1943)
Description:
Rachmaninoff was the last musician of the 19th century type to simultaneously perform, compose, and conduct. Among his diverse works, including piano pieces, chamber music, symphonies, and operas, the concerto is a brilliant milestone of the Romantic concerto, with its exquisite intertwining of superb pianism and superb orchestration, as he himself was a great pianist. The first concerto, written when he was just 17 years old at the Moscow Conservatory and later revised, is full of Russian flavor, the fourth concerto offers a glimpse of contemporary sounds, and the rhapsody on a theme by Paganini is famous for its lyrical 18th variation that makes one's heartstrings flutter. This is the complete set of Rachmaninoff's concertos.
