Description:
Jean Chakmour, winner of the 10th Hamamatsu International Piano Competition. His second release on the BIS label features Liszt and Schubert! Chakmour’s new arrangement of “Swan Song” and “Four Forgotten Waltzes”! Includes a Japanese booklet SACD hybrid disc. Jean Chakmour won first prize at the 10th Hamamatsu International Piano Competition in 2018, as well as numerous other awards, including the Chamber Music Prize and the Sapporo Mayor’s Prize. As a special prize for winning the competition, he was selected to make his recording debut on the BIS label. He released his debut album (KKC-4169) in January 2019, recorded during a session at Act City Hamamatsu—the venue for the competition—and instantly attracted widespread attention. As part of the competition’s winner’s tour, he successfully performed over 20 concerts nationwide starting in April 2019 and has since been visiting Japan regularly. This recording was made during a session at Wyaston Concert Hall in the UK in January 2020. The program features Schubert’s *Swan Song* S560, arranged by Liszt for solo piano, and *Four Forgotten Waltzes* S215. “Swan Song,” one of Schubert’s three major song cycles, differs from “The Beautiful Mill-Girl” and “Winter Journey”—which Schubert arranged himself—in that it was compiled posthumously by publishers and friends and lacks the continuity typical of a song cycle. For this reason, Chakmul has rearranged the order of the pieces according to his own artistic sensibility. This is a highly acclaimed performance that presents a new narrative. Meanwhile, *Four Forgotten Waltzes* S215, composed between 1881 and 1884, is notable for the gentle, serene tone characteristic of Liszt’s later years. You can enjoy this performance, which is filled with Chakmull’s refined sensibility and lyrical expression. King International
