Description:

[An Unknown 18th Century Oratorio Spun by a Beautiful and Strong Woman and Her Faith in God]. Pier Francesco Tozzi was a castrato singer, composer, and voice teacher active in the Baroque era. Born in Cesena, Italy, he worked in Rome, Milan, Genoa, and London, and composed many operas, arias, and cantatas. In his book "Opinioni de' cantori antichi e moderni" (Views of Ancient and Modern Singers), he systematically explained the integration of chest and head voice, ornamentation, improvisational ornamentation, recitative and aria singing, etc., combining tradition with the new musical theory and practice of the time, and laying the foundation for singer education. He was an important figure. The Martyrdom of St. Catherine" is an oratorio that was performed in the court chapel of Habsburg Emperor Leopold I. It was written for a woman martyr and the triumph of faith. The theme of a female martyr and the triumph of faith is common to oratorios by Scarlatti, Stradella, and others of the same period, and the musical theory advocated by Torges is also fully demonstrated in this powerful work. The music revolves around the solo voice, and deeply portrays the emotions of the characters. The power of the Emperor Massimino is demonstrated in powerful passages and dissonances, Caterina conveys the strength of her faith by contrasting sadness and intensity in a two-part aria, and the queen is given a technical aria. The emphasis is on the rich expression of emotion in bel canto singing. Valeria Girardello, who sings St. Catherine, studied at the Venice Conservatory and La Scala Academy. At Teatro La Fenice, she has sung to great acclaim in New Year's Concert 2020 and as Maddalena in Verdi's "Rigoletto," and at La Scala she has sung Puccini, Verdi, Richard Strauss, and Rossini. In the Baroque repertoire, she has sung major roles in Vivaldi's "Catone," Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater," Handel's "Teodora," and many other works. Naxos Japan
