Born in Shanghai in 1955, Ye Xiaogang is one of the leading contemporary composers of modern China. He studied composition at the Central Conservatory of Music in China from 1978 to 1983, and then at the Eastman School of Music from 1987, where he studied with Samuel Adler and Louis Andreesen. In 2013, he began a concert series featuring his works on "various regions of China," with concerts in New York, Beijing, and other cities. He is known for incorporating episodes from Chinese folklore, landscapes, nature, and other motifs into his own compositions, and has received prestigious awards not only for his concert music, but also for his numerous film scores. This album contains Xiaogang's chamber works spanning more than 30 years, from 1989 to 2023, and each work is marked by a deep connection to Chinese cultural heritage, breathing rhythmic and melodic motifs and dramatic forms.In "Gardenia," the biwa, a traditional Chinese instrument, is also used impressively.
