This is Mahler's "Ode to the Earth", which is a rare repertoire for Sell. Although Sell was not a conductor who took Mahler's music in his stride, he was a very compatible composer, as evidenced by his superb performance of Mahler's Sixth Symphony. According to his record, he conducted the "Song of the Earth" only four times, but the first movement, with its frenetic tempo and intense expression, will have the listeners hooked. With Mahler singers Forrester and Lewis in tow, the performance was flawless. The dramatic expression is not lacking, as Sell is an accomplished opera singer, and the scene of both passion and desolation in the "Farewell" is breathtaking. This performance was first released on Hunt/ARKADIA, but it was mislabeled as a live performance in Berlin, as well as being in mono.Subsequent products inherited the misdescription, but it has been confirmed that this is a local Cleveland performance, as Sell did not play in Europe with the Cleveland Orchestra in 1967.
