Surin Phaksiri's Work 2: Special Morlam Collection 1960s-80s
Description:
Just as Japan has Haruomi Hosono, Jamaica has Sonia Pottinger and Herman Chin Loy, Thailand has Surin Parksiri. This is the world's first compilation of his moram treasures, a collection of Surin Parksiri's moram works, which has been the main goal of Soi48 and M's Thai music archive series since its inception. This is the largest volume and the best sound quality in this series, and in a sense, the ultimate title of Thai Isaan music. Surin Parksiri was a revolutionary who changed the direction of Thai singing with his song "Issan Ram Plueng," which blended traditional Thai performing arts with Western pop music, but he was also more creative in developing moram, the traditional art of storytelling from his roots in Issan, the northeast region of Thailand. This album is a compilation of his moram works from the 1970s and 1980s, when the medium shifted from vinyl to cassette tape, and has never been compiled in Thailand. The reason why this gem of a collection of songs has remained untouched for so long is that he was an independent producer and most of his works were distributed as 7-inch singles. The single-song production era gave way to the cassette tape era, and the need for a large supply of sound sources arose due to formatting requirements. This was the driving force behind the morum boom of the 1980s, but Parksiri's style was to pursue innovation in sound (orchestration and band performance) instead of breaking the traditional form, and he succeeded in creating musical variations for old and new morums of all kinds, famous and unknown. This is astonishing in this genre, which tends to be mono-chorded and fixed in terms of performance and instruments. The 22 tracks on this release range from the beautifully authentic to the radically experimental, and showcase his ability to take the traditional music of moram and pass it on through pattana (Thai for "reform" or "development"). Most of the songs are first-time reissues and first-time CD releases (some are first-time recordings). This is the first time for most of the songs to be reissued and released on CD (some for the first time on vinyl). Thank you very much for your patience!
