Camille Saint-Saëns

Description:

Interesting to listen to all together! All four symphonic poems by Saint-Saëns with ear-tickling beautiful sound flow and skillful instrumental method critical edition first recorded in 2021 for the 100th anniversary of the death of Saint-Saëns (1835-1921). It is performed by the Basel Symphony Orchestra and its principal conductor Ivor Bolton. This fine recording beautifully captures the delicate sound of Saint-Saëns' music in all its splendor. It is also interesting to note that this is the first recording using a new edition of the score. The genre of symphonic poetry, which Liszt originated, was taken over by French composers who excelled at depicting colorful scenes. Saint-Saëns is the first of these composers to leave four symphonic poems. All of them are fine pieces of music that naturally musicalize easy-to-understand stories with skillful orchestration. The beautiful use of harp and other instruments adds to the beauty of the music and makes it a real pleasure to listen to. The "Bacchanal," a ballet music full of enthusiasm, depicts a great feast of victory with a bold Arabic melody. The Spindle of Onfar (1871)...Greek mythology. It depicts Hercules succumbing to the feminine charms of the queen Onfar. Phaethon" (1873)...Greek mythology.Phaethon, driving the sun in his chariot, runs out of control and falls to the earth. The father Zeus has no choice but to extinguish him and his son with a lightning bolt to avert danger on earth. The Dance of Death (1874)...Composed based on a poem by French poet Henri Cazalis. Skeletons dance in a graveyard at midnight. When the chicken announces the morning, the skeletons return to their graves. The Youth of Hercules (1877)...Greek mythology. A tale of young Hercules, drowned in the vexations of pleasure, and his growth until he regains his dignity as a hero. King International
