Hard-nosed cellist Marc Coppey records two Shostakovich cello concertos! Hard-nosed cellist Marc Coppey has recorded the two Shostakovich cello concertos. Coppey was born in Strasbourg. After studying at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris, he won first prize at the J.S. Bach International Competition at the age of 18, which brought him to the attention of the world. His subsequent career has been spectacular, and he has performed as a soloist with conductors such as Inbal, Clivine, Gilbert, and Yutaka Sado. He has also enjoyed a distinguished career as a chamber musician, earning the trust of Piris, Belov, Dumay, Mullova, Payu, and others. As a member of the Ysaÿe String Quartet (1995-2000), he has made numerous recordings. He is currently teaching at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris, and is further expanding his activities as artistic director of the Zagreb Soloists Ensemble, where he has performed the Haydn & C.P.E. Bach cello concertos (AU 97716) with a handful of musicians to great acclaim. He has also released Dvořák's Cello Concerto (AU 97734) with the Deutsches Symphonieorchester Berlin under the baton of Kirill Karabits.Shostakovich's two cello concertos dedicated to Rostropovich are now considered masterpieces in the cellist's repertoire. Koppei's performance of Shostakovich's unique world of full-bodied works, which he tackles head-on, is a substantial work that is being hailed as a new masterpiece.
