The combination of Andrej Borejko and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra is exquisite! Shostakovich's memorable Symphony No. 1 was composed in 1925 when Shostakovich was 19 years old, and premiered in 1926 by the Leningrad Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mariko. The work was advertised at the time as "The Mozart of our time! It was a work that made Shostakovich internationally famous and established his reputation as a world-famous composer.Although the four-movement First Symphony retains traces of Shostakovich's early days as a composer, it fully demonstrates his later style and personality, including his pursuit of a new sonority, concise writing style, and fresh, unconstrained flavor, and this degree of perfection at such a young age is a surprise. Symphony No. 6 was premiered at the "Soviet Music Festival" in Moscow on November 5, 1939, two years after Shostakovich's masterpiece No. 5 (the American premiere was given on November 29, 1940, conducted by Stokowski and Philadelphia Orchestra). The lyrical and spontaneous style of No. 5 is the exact opposite of No. 5, and everything is as clear and pure as a soft ray of sunlight. It is in three movements, lacking a sonata-form movement corresponding to the opening movement, and begins with a very slow Largo movement, followed by an Allegro in the second movement, and a Presto in the third movement, increasing in tempo and excitement.Born in Leningrad in 1957, Boreyko specializes in the music of his native Russia, and has performed the first series of Shostakovich symphonies with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra [Symphony No. 4, Suite from "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk"] (93193), the second series [Symphonies No. 9 and 15] (93284), and the third series of Shostakovich's symphonies with the Staatskapelle Berlin.
