A Stunning Ligeti Performance by Loto & Les Siècles! Francois-Xavier Loto, the eccentric conductor who never fails to astonish music fans with his unexpected projects. Ligeti’s 2016 recording is being reissued by harmoniamundi (the previous catalog number, ASM-26, is now out of print). Born in 1923 and deceased in 2006, Ligeti is a contemporary composer whose 100th birthday will be celebrated in 2023. The idea of performing his works with *Les Siècles*, an ensemble specializing in period instruments, is one that would never occur to the average person. Two of the three pieces included on this album are chamber works for woodwind quintet. While these are important works in the genre, this is, of course, the first time they have been performed on period instruments. The quintet consists of Les Siècles members Marion Lalanque (flute), Hélène Muro (oboe), Christian Labori (clarinet), Michel Rolland (bassoon), and Pierre Rougeri (horn)—but what strikes the listener first is the distinct timbre of each woodwind instrument. In particular, the bassoon and horn evoke a 19th-century French sound that is now nearly extinct, completely transforming the impression of the piece. Even more intriguing is the “Chamber Concerto” conducted by Loto. A work for 13 musicians, it is known for the technical demands on each performer and the difficulty of the ensemble playing. While it unfolds with Ligeti’s signature macabre musical style, the bright, pastel-like timbre makes it completely accessible and free of any sense of difficulty or obscurity. Rather, you’ll find yourself savoring the 18 minutes that fly by in the blink of an eye. You can’t truly discuss Ligeti without hearing this.
