The third volume of Brabbins' Vaughan Williams Cycle, which made a splash with its 1920 version of the London Symphony (CDA 68190), combines Symphony No. 3 (Rural Symphony) and No. 4. Both Volumes 1 and 2 have included Vaughan Williams' little-known orchestral works side by side, and this time the cantata for tenor, chorus, and orchestra, Sarabande "Helen," which was composed around 1913-14 but was unfinished and unpublished. The text of Christopher Marlowe's play "The Tragedy of Dr. Forstas" is used for the lyrics.
