German oboist Albrecht Mayer's new album is a collection of oboe arrangements of works by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) and his family. He performs with one of the world's finest ensembles, the Berlin Baroque Solisten. The works performed are by three generations of the Bach family, beginning with Johann Sebastian Bach's great-uncle Johann Christoph (1642-1703) and ending with his two sons Carl Philipp Emanuel (1714-1788) and Johann Christoph Friedrich (1732-1795). These are the works. Thus, this compilation may be called a musical invitation to the Bach family. The earliest work is an arrangement of Johann Christian's Lamento "Oh, if my head were full of water," originally composed for alto and strings in Eisenach in the early 1670s. It is a very expressive piece, full of insistent dissonance, reflecting the sin-stricken, weeping human soul in its lyrics.Johann Sebastian's work is varied, and his long-lived works are equally varied. The Concerto in A major, BWV 1055, is a vigorous, joyful work, probably from the Köthen period. It is known to us only in the harpsichord and string version arranged by Bach in Leipzig in the late 1730s for the Collegium Musicum, but the lively interplay of solo and tutti suggests that the original is rather earlier, probably written around 1721. It was probably written in Keten around 1721. Many have suggested that the original solo instrument may have been the oboe. On the other hand, the "My death melancholy is assuaged" from the "Easter Oratorio" was clearly written during Bach's Leipzig years. This pastoral piece was originally composed in 1725 as a secular cantata for the birthday of Christian, Duke of Saxe-Weissenfels. Its melody is as memorable as the immortal "Aria on the G string" and the joking "Badinelli," and it is probably one of Bach's best-known instrumental works.Other works on the album include "If You Are By My Side" by Bach's fellow composer Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel, Johann Christoph Friedrich's Concerto for Keyboard in A major, and Carl Philipp Emanuel's Concerto for Harpsichord in G major. Albrecht Mayer's 2021 "Mozart Album" was a great success, reaching number one on the German classical charts for two consecutive months. Universal Music/IMS
